Lorne Somerville has been appointed as the new Chairman of Swiss operator Sunrise following the unexpected death of Dominik Koechlin.

Somerville will head the company’s Board of Directors for the remaining term of office after 56-year-old Koechlin, pictured left, passed away on 12 July following a rapid deterioration in his health.

Peter Schöpfer replaces Somerville as the operator’s Vice-Chairman, while board member Jesper Ovesen joins the Nomination and Compensation Committee of the board.

Somerville said: “Dominik’s death is a tragic loss for all of us. He was the first independent member to join the board when CVC made its investment in Sunrise in October 2010. He has been a constant source of wisdom, generosity and kindness throughout his time with us”, said Vice-Chairman Lorne Somerville.

“We offer his family our deepest and most sincere condolences.“

Koechlin’s time as chairman saw Sunrise capture a 27 percent share of the Swiss mobile market and become the market’s second biggest player.

Revenues in the three months to March were CHF 489 billion, with sales up 5.3 percent.

The operator plans a €1 billion IPO this year to boost its balance sheet and exploit growth opportunities.
